How To Shop Smart At An Estate Sale

How To Shop Smart At An Estate Sale Once upon a time, estate sales occurred when the rich-old-widowed-Aunt who never had children passed away. The next-of-kin was notified and left to sell the estate and everything in it. In today’s world, that still happens on occasion, but estate sales can happen for a variety of reasons. There are multiple events that lead to the sale of a multitude of possessions. Estate sales can happen when people get divorced or retire and need to sell their possessions. And some people just want to downsize and live lighter and with less, so an estate sale is the perfect way to get rid of the stuff you’ve acquired and make a little money doing it.

If you’ve never shopped an estate sale before, you might be overwhelmed at the thought. But if you learn a little bit now, you’ll come out further ahead in your adventure later.

Going Right To The Start

Find out when the sale will open and be there as soon as it begins. Estate sales are not the same as garage sales; estate sales often have a finer selection of quality pieces that people have had for many years. People are trying to get rid of the majority of their possessions, not just a few old toys, tools, and clothes. Dealers will typically arrive at the sale before anyone else, as well as a few die-hard bargain hunters, so you can expect to wait in line. What you’ll find inside will be well worth the wait, though, so bring a book and a bottle of water and you should be fine.

Keeping An Eye On Things

Don’t be alarmed if you see security guards keeping a watchful eye. Most estate sales have a lot of expensive items, and with the large number of people in attendance, it’s difficult to watch over everyone at once. Security guards are sometimes hired to keep an eye on things and to diffuse conflict should it arise. If you plan to bring a backpack or a large tote bag to the sale, be aware that some estate sales won’t allow these items. It’s best to bring your moderately-sized purse, or better yet, put your money or wallet in your pocket and shop hands-free.

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask

Don’t be afraid to ask about items that might not be tagged, such as curtains, potted plants, and kitchen appliances. The point of an Estate sale is to get rid of everything and you might just get a deal if you ask. Also, remember to check out other areas of the estate, such as the garage or an outbuilding that might house items not on display in the main house.
