Long ago and far away, Estate Sales happened when the matriarch (or patriarch) of a family with extreme wealth passed away. All that was left in the home was sold and thus the family could move on. Today, Estate Sales can still happen for that reason, but now there are other events that lead to the sale of a multitude of possessions.
In October, we hosted an Estate Sale in Simi Valley for a couple who was ready to retire; they sold their possessions so that they could buy an RV and they set out for an adventure on the road. Sometimes, people retire from their marriage; Estate Sales can be a way to be rid of possessions after a divorce. Some people just want to downsize and an Estate Sale is a perfect way to do that as well.
If you’ve never shopped an Estate Sale before, you might be overwhelmed at the thought. Learn a little bit now and you’ll come out further ahead in your adventure later.
Be On Time
Find out when the sale will open and be there at the start. Estate Sales are not the same as yard sales; Estate Sales often have a finer selection of quality pieces as people are trying to get rid of the majority of their possessions, not just a few cast-offs. Bargain hunters and dealers will arrive at the scene as early as possible, so expect to wait in line. Trust us, though; it is usually well worth the wait.
Security
Don’t be alarmed if you see security guards cursing the grounds and keeping a watchful eye. Many people will attend an Estate Sale and it is difficult to watch over everyone at one time. Also, bringing a large tote or an oversized purse might make you stand out; if it is allowed in at all. It is best to bring your moderately sized purse, or better yet, put your money or wallet in your pocket and shop hands-free.
Everything and Everywhere
Don’t be afraid to ask about items that might not be tagged, such as curtains, potted plants, and kitchen appliances. The point of an Estate sale is to get rid of everything and you might just get a deal if you ask. Also, remember to check out other areas of the estate, such as the garage or an outbuilding that might house items not on display in the main house.
Pre-Plan
Check out the Heritage Estate Sales website to get a lot of information before the sale. Not only will you find out where and when the sales will be held, we list as many of the items as we can, many with photos, so that you can get an idea of what you’ll find at the sale. We also have a mailing list where you can be informed of upcoming sales once we announce them. And if you have any questions, you can call us or even send an email inquiry.
Shopping at an Estate Sale can be exciting. With so many different things to look at in once place, you might be there for quite a while. One man’s trash may be another man’s treasure, but one man’s treasure can benefit many.
