Let’s Dish About Dishes

Let’s Dish About DishesDishes are still one of the most popular items on a bridal registry. From fine China to designer sets, dishes can be beautiful enough to stand alone on display and can set the tone for any special occasion.  As time passes, you might find yourself collecting different sets for different uses.

Now that you are ready to have your estate sale, you find that you may have collected more than you intended to!  No worries; your well-loved pieces might be worth more than you can imagine.

China Dinnerware

When it comes to your china sets, there are a few different things that determine the value of your pieces.

  • Brand. Pieces that are hard-to-find from companies that are well-known, like Lennox and Welmar, will bring in more value than pieces from companies who mass produce their items.
  • Pattern. This can make a big difference when determining value of your dishes. A simple vine design can be worth significantly less than, say, a strawberry pattern.
  • Region. Different regions of the world produce different sets of Chinaware. Did you know that some pieces are even made in Germany? You’ll find that value varies based on rarity.
  • Age. Older sets are obviously worth more than pieces that were produced more recently.

China isn’t the only type of dish that is worth money.  Older dishes such as blue and white transferware can be worth something to collectors. Age and condition of any limited edition piece can greatly influence the value.

Glassware

Depression era glassware is common when it comes to the antique market. And by glassware, we don’t simply mean drinking vessels.  Glass plates, serving platters, and trays can be quite valuable.  Look for the following colors to help determine if you have a pricey piece:

  • Pink glass holds a high value, depending on the shape, rarity, and condition.
  • Green holds a similar value, but be on the lookout for various shades of green ranging from near-yellow to deep jade.
  • Purple Depression glass is worth more because it is rarer and often comes in more unusual patterns.

Your tea cups and teapots that are made from porcelain and china can fetch a high price if they are in good condition and if you have an entire set, you’ll find that collectors will pay more. Those rare patterns and famous makers, such as Mason, are still your best bet for boosting value.
